What ill wind bodes this night of rest
What dark cloud dares obscure the moon
What noisome pestilence shatters this reverie
How dare they, how dare they
Don’t they realize this day is done
It’s done I tell you done
Tomorrow awaits in trembling anticipation
Unfurl those golden wings of song
Break forth create memories new
Even better, greater, wilder, free
Stir the slumber awake to life
Until the clouds are banished
And there will never remain a night
Embrace in slow motion the gift, the years
Until you laugh when you stumble
Then rise back up and cry
For what ill wind, what pestilence, what cloud
Can dare to rob you now
With the taste of life content fulfilled
Fresh upon your lips

Summers ago
In the field
Beyond the hill
He hung a swing
From the arms
Of a tall oak tree

I’m going to fall…
“No” he said
“It’s strong
I made it safe”
The tall oak tree

Years of memories
Windswept memories
Carried forward
By strong arms
My tall oak tree

Unbroken by the elements
Life
I’m going to fall
“No” he whispers
“I made it safe”
As the tall oak tree

Dedicated to the man in the gray sweater

You came
I saw
You went…
Where has my little boy gone
Hold my hand, hold my hand
I’ve seen dreams
I’ve dreamt dreams
The sun rose
In your eyes
Memories written
On the pages of years…
Mine and yours
Always ours
Hold my hand
Where has my baby gone
Young man
I dreamt
I saw
Opened my eyes
Where did the time go
Locked in my heart evermore…
Once I held you
Tiny
In my arms
So tiny
And now you hold
My heart
Take with you always
Every path
Every road
I close my eyes
I dreamt a dream
Boy, baby boy
My young man

Dedicated to Boy

In this field where I now lay sleep evades
As the birds sing softly to yield a dawn
Although I am now silent yet I hear
Vital sounds of life, alive, all around
How solemn you are there remembering
Yes how I long to feel a kiss of rain
Upon my face as so gentle a breeze
Whispers softly trembling across the land
To witness again if only I could
The slow rhythm dance of winter’s ballad
After the golden hue of leaves have flown
Oh won’t you speak to me for I was real
As you kneel beside this stone etched with grief
In this field where I lay but do not sleep
Why do you weep for me as I for you
Why do the flowers grow beside my grave
Across this place as though they could cover
The bitter regret of hollow sorrow
Or ease the throbbing ache which broke this ground
It is so silent here so very still
As the silver light of so pale a moon
Slices forth from beyond a darkened sky
Marking the names on cold gray slabs, read mine
How cruel is time which once gave, now has ceased
How lonely, I sigh far beyond this place
For all that has happened and will no more
There now remains but a tangible trace
In this field where I now lay showing time
I was real

The state of affairs in Denmark
Looks cloudy with possible rain
And here in New York
It would appear
Summer’s past us by again
Seems that winter’s coming
I have no boots to wear
And there’s babies crying
I hear them crying
Pretty much everywhere
Of course there’s talk
A lot of talk
World peace? What odds I say
For the life of me
I really just can’t see
How all that much has changed
Except the weather
Always the weather
And I suppose
It just might snow
On the plains
In Spain

You don’t know the who
Of the me
That I am
How impossible
That you should

Yet here am I
Standing
Desperation scratched
Through every feature
Of my streaming face

Reaching… reaching…
How numb
Have I become
How shallow unfolds
The chapters of my life

Before you now
How could you know
Unless… I…
Were you
I could be you

Does that frighten
Does that still
Your hand
How controlled…
Here I am

Asking
Through a fragment
Of hope
A spark, a burst… faded
Gone

You touch my hand
It is cold…

A face without a name
A statistic by which you govern
I am one
Feelings and emotions portray my very life
Circumstances and events
Define my destiny
For I am one
I do not just exist
For you to catalog
I am more so much more

When did we misplace
the thread so tightly wound
A tapestry unravels
as colors drain to lifeless
Corrupted
by the dust
the tiny worm which gnaws
its bleak so bitter hole
through the fibers
the hardened core
that once had been
our lives

Forever it might be
that we are joined
by blood
Yet souls have ceased
to merge
So
fragile becomes the canvas
once so tightly bound
Watch it waste away
and vanish
before our very eyes
as obscure
become the thoughts
of those enlightened days
of old
Too distant now
to fathom
the thread from where
we unknowingly
left off

Does anyone ever wonder
How the other half lives
What ties that bind them
What emotions sway
What makes the mechanisms
Of each individual brain tick
What holds them together
When they have nothing left
How do they feel when they wake
Do they question the choices
Or the lack of opportunities
Are they angry inside
Or does sad and lonely hold them
Do they find themselves asking why
Or do they accept with no expectation
No hope or dream of more
As they wonder
How does the other half live

Renting the sky
With a flood
Of soon forgotten tears
The ground trembled
As souls took wing
